Areguling Beach Lombok: Surf Away from the Crowds

  • Lombok

Last updated: March 2026

Areguling Beach, Lombok, is one of my favourite surf spots near Kuta, and in 2026, it still feels like one of the best uncrowded waves in the area. Access is still via a rough coastal road, and conditions vary with the season, but the wet season often delivers the cleanest and most fun surf of the year.

The setting is just as much a part of the appeal. A white sand bay, green hills fed by frequent rain, and a stretch of coastline that still feels largely untouched make Areguling hard to beat on the right day.

Visit it soon, because it remains undeveloped for now, although there are plans for a fish market on the beach that could change some of that natural charm.

For the moment, its tranquillity and pumping surf are what make it so special. The beach itself is almost always empty, even during peak season. No vendors are trying to sell you sarongs, you can walk the shoreline in peace, and you might even cross paths with a carabou (water buffalo).

The surf is usually less crowded than some of the better-known breaks nearby, but if it is on, do not expect to have it completely to yourself.

Here’s what you need to know about Areguling Beach…

Areguling Beach Lombok Quick Facts

  • Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers
  • Best season: Wet season, especially January to early April
  • Travel time from Kuta Lombok: Around 20 to 25 minutes
  • Boat to the break: Around 50,000 IDR

If you are chasing Areguling Beach surf conditions, expect a reef break, a peaceful bay, and fewer crowds than many nearby spots. A local boat to the break costs around 50,000 IDR, and the beach is best suited to surfers who are comfortable with a slightly more challenging wave and access road.

When to Surf Areguling Beach?

The Areguling surf breaks are generally favourable all year round. But, for optimal surfing conditions, visit during the rainy season, between January and early April. March often has the best waves as the first southern swells roll across the Indian Ocean and hit Lombok’s southern coast.

During these months, the southeast trade winds are not blowing (these are the winds that make Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula offshore during the dry season,, so you get glassy and consistent waves.

Areguling Beach, Lombok, offers both left and right-hand breaks. The lefts are hollow, faster, and best surfed at mid to high tide. The rights are more predictable, with long waves that often barrel on the end section and work best in mid to low tide.

The waves break in the middle of the bay, making for a long paddle out or a quick boat ride.  You can organise a sampan at one of the local warungs for about 50.000 IDR.

In my opinion, the wet season rules for surfing in Lombok.  All too

Best Time to Visit Areguling Beach

  • Wet Season (November to March): expect occasional rain but better surf conditions and wind
  • Dry season (April to October): trade winds rip through Areguling on a regular basis, expect clean conditions on some mornings.

What Surfboard to Ride at Areguling Beach?

Shortboards are generally the best surfboards for Areguling.

When the swell is up, Areguling Beach Lombok is a fast, steep wave that breaks over a shallow reef, making it more suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers. Thus, you’ll want a shortboard for waves above 2-3 foot.  Occasionally, a smaller swell means that longboarders, funboarders, and the like can ride the waves at Areguling Beach.

Surf Lessons at Areguling Beach

Currently, there are no surfing schools located on Areguling Beach. The beach is more popular with intermediate and advanced surfers, not beginners.

Areguling Beach has a local surf club. While it doesn’t provide surf lessons, it offers board rentals and boat rides to the reef break.

If you are a beginner surfer, Kuta Lombok has many surf camps that provide private and group lessons.  Consider taking a lesson at Tanjung Aan Beach or Selong Belanak Beach

Other Lombok Surf Spots Near Areguling Beach

If you’re wondering where to surf in Kuta Lombok apart from Areguling Beach, you have plenty of options.  The area around Kuta Lombok is the most popular place to stay and also the most touristy, but the waves in Kuta Bay are seldom surfed.

If the wind is on Areguling Beach, waves like Geurpuk Insides and Mawi will be clean.  If it is too small, try Seger Beach on the other side of town.  We often check Areguling Beach on our way to Mawi because Mawi Beach is guaranteed to be protected from the wind that affects Areguling.

Where is Areguling Beach Lombok?

Areguling Beach is a secluded bay in Pujut District, in the southern part of Lombok. It’s about 50 kilometres from the capital city, Mataram, and 10 kilometres west of Kuta, one of the most popular Lombok surf beaches.

Areguling Beach, Lombok lies at the end of a bumpy track, roughly 4 kilometres from the main coastal road.

How to Get to Areguling Beach Lombok?

The easiest way to get to Areguling Beach, Lombok, is by car or motor scooter. Taxis and rentals are also available, but quite pricey. Public transportation, such as buses, is nonexistent.

If you’re travelling from Kuta Lombok, the trip takes about 20 minutes with some breathtaking views of both Kuta Bay and Areguling Bay along the way.  For tourists arriving from Lombok International Airport, Areguling is 45 minutes away.

Areguling Beach is not sign-posted, but you can see the wide bay as you drive over the hill from Kuta along the coastal road, Jalan Mawun. Be sure to keep your eyes out for the turnoff; these days, you can follow the “Somewhere, Lombok” signs, which are new resort developments, to get to Areguling Beach.

The beach is about 4 kilometres from the main highway. To reach it, you pass through a small village, across hills and farms. The road is unpaved in some areas and can get muddy after heavy rain. Be cautious, especially during the wet season.

Things to Do at Areguling Beach Lombok

If you come to Lombok to surf, you’ll find plenty to do.   Of the surf beaches of Lombok, Areguling Beach is undoubtedly a standout.

Beyond the Are Guling Lombok surf adventures, you’ll find a nice spot for swimming. The beach has clear, balmy waters of bright turquoise blue. Nearer to the shore, it’s calmer, thanks to the headland that blocks the winds..

Snorkelling is another popular activity at Areguling Beach. You can rent snorkelling gear from one of the warungs (local shops) or bring your own.

For avid hikers, the surrounding hills offer striking panoramas of the coastline and ocean. During low tide, you can walk to the islet, Gili Nusa, at the eastern edge of the shore.

But perhaps there’s no better way to enjoy Areguling Beach Lombok (aside from surfing, of course!) than by relaxing on the sand and taking in the incredible scenery. If you fancy a drink, grab a cold beer from the makeshift bar at the warung further down the beach.

Travel Tips (2026)

  • Morning is usually the best time to check it, especially if you want cleaner conditions.
  • Wet season is often the sweet spot here, particularly from January to early April.
  • The road in can get muddy after heavy rain, so scooter riders should be cautious.
  • If you do not want a long paddle, organise a local boat from one of the warungs.
  • Beginners are usually better off elsewhere, with spots like Tanjung Aan or Selong Belanak being more forgiving.

Areguling is better suited to intermediate and experienced surfers. The wave can be fast and steep when there is a swell, and it breaks over a shallow reef. There is also a long paddle unless you take a local boat out to the break. If you are visiting after rain, take extra care on the access road, as parts of it can get slippery and muddy.
