Located in southern Lombok, it has a slower pace than Bali but still gives you access to a wide range of surf breaks, beautiful beaches, and a laid-back town that is easy to settle into for a few days or a few weeks.
One of the biggest draws is the variety of waves. Kuta Lombok works well for beginners looking to learn, intermediates wanting to improve, and more experienced surfers chasing better conditions across the area. There is also a solid mix of surf camps and surf schools, which makes it a good base if you want support in the water without giving up the rest of the travel experience.
I’ve done 20+ trips to Kuta Lombok, and it is one of those places I keep coming back to. Beyond the surf, there are waterfalls, sunset spots, cafés, spas, and plenty of beaches to explore, so it never feels like a one-note destination.

Top 5 Best Kuta Lombok Beaches
Tanjung Ann Beach
Tanjung Ann is probably the most well known beach near Kuta Lombok. Tanjung Ann has the whitest sand and the bluest water and is a postcard perfect reason that Lombok has better beaches than Bali. Not long ago, this beach was mainly used by locals on the weekends. During the week, it was entirely empty! Not anymore, Tanjung Ann is now home to 20+ warungs and a gaggle of surf schools. These days, we like to hang at Bum Bum Warung, although Turtle Warung is the original and still serves cold beer and great food.
You can surf out front by either paddling out about 300 meters or paying 50.000 rupiah for a lift on one of the colorful boats waiting inshore. The wave ranges from being an absolute beginner spot full of surf camps and longboards to being a powerful righthander with a mighty current. If unsure, ask the locals before you paddle out. There are a couple of other waves in the bay that a guide can take you to if you ask.
Seger Beach
Seger Beach is about 10 minutes away from Kuta Lombok and is one the closest surfable beaches to town. You can walk to Seger in about 25 minutes, but most people drive alongside the Mandalika MotoGP track. Seger Beach is about a 2 minute walk from the Novotel Kuta Lombok.
Seger is best in the morning before the wind picks up on a small swell. Big swell makes Seger un-surfable because it is very exposed. At Seger, you’ll find A-frame wedges that break over reef and rock. There’s also a left that rolls in off the rock in the center of the beach that the local kids love to surf. Seger has a family owned warung with drinks, snacks, hot food, coconuts, beer and cigarettes.
Next to the beach is Seger Hill, which is a popular viewpoint and sunset spot. From the top of the hill, you look back across the town of Kuta, Mandalika Beach, and Kuta Bay.
Mawun Beach
Mawun Beach is about 20 minutes west of Kuta towards Mawi. Turn off when you see a brown sign for Mawun Beach. Mawun is an exquisite bay of crystal clear water that apparently has a wave, although I’ve never surfed there. The reason I love Mawun is because it is so beautiful and hardly anyone goes there.
Mawi Beach
If you visit Kuta Lombok during the dry season and want to surf good waves, you’ll definitely visit Mawi Beach. Mawi Beach has the most consistent waves and can be powerful and big when other parts of the island are small because it picks up the most swell. There’s a short left and a right that really gets cooking on low tide. Lots of locals surf here, so show respect.
Mawi is a bit of a mission to get to… It’s about 40 minutes west of Kuta on the paved road and then 15 minutes bumping down a dirt track that can be treacherous for both cars and motorbikes. We once got a van jacked up on a boulder here. Our driver and about 40 locals couldn’t figure out how to eject it for over an hour. Luckily, a bunch of guys from Western Australia sorted us out.
Mawi Beach is well worth the journey, even if you don’t surf. A family lives in a small warung that serves hot food, snacks, and drinks so you don’t go hungry after all that travel. Thatched shade structures and lounger chairs provide an excellent view of the surf and sunset. Mawi Beach has arguably the best sunsets in the world. The little islands that dot the ocean make an interesting foreground for deep orange sunsets. Oh, and Mawi has the coolest sand I’ve ever seen. It looks like Dippin Dots ice cream balls. Can you tell I love Mawi?
Selong Belanak Beach
Selong Belanak is known for its gentle rolling beach break waves and is often a spot that surf guides will take absolute beginners. We will sometimes visit Selong Belanak after surfing spots further west for lunch at the upscale Laut Biru Bar and Restaurant. In the late afternoon, the local farmers herd their kerbau (water buffalos) across the beach towards home.

Regular flights on Citilink, Garuda, Lion, and Wings Airlines leave from Denpasar Domestic Airport to Lombok Praya International Airport many times throughout the day and cost about $40-95 USD per person one way. Kuta Lombok Where to Stay
The best place to stay in Kuta Lombok is near town because you are in the middle of all the action and the surf breaks to the east and west. We like staying in Kuta Lombok rather than at one of the beaches because you can go out surfing in either direction during the day and come back and be within walking distance of all the restaurants, bars, and shops. On the other hand, if you are looking for peace, consider staying out of town due to the noise from the mosque, roosters, bikes, etc. The Novotel, Villa Serena, and the Porter will give you a more remote location with a bit of serenity that you won’t get in town. Novotel Kuta Lombok
Families really seem to love the Novotel Lombok, probably because it is the one of the few places with a kids club on the island. The buffet breakfast is top notch. The Novotel Lombok has a variety of accommodation options including 1 and 2 bedroom private villas with their own pool or regular hotel rooms. The Novotel Lombok is located out of town near Seger Beach which means less 5 am noise from the mosque and a surfing beach within walking distance, which is unique as most of the accommodation in Kuta town requires at minimum a 15 minute drive to surf.

Jivava Resort Kuta Lombok
Jivana is just plain charming – the meticulously maintained gardens, friendly staff, koi ponds, free range tortoises – all make Jivana a favorite among families and couples alike. Located on a backstreet in Kuta town, Jivana is walking distance to the main restaurants and bars in Kuta, but a hidden oasis away from the hustle of town. Jivana has both private villas with their own pool and hotel rooms that have access to the main pool. Jivana is dreamy in itself, but their spa is next level with incredible service and really good prices, we usually visited Jivana multiple times during every trip.

Rascals is adult only so leave the kiddos at home for this one. Two palm tree flanked pools are noted for their chill vibes (not super crowded and no screaming kids). The staff is very attentive and all the rooms and common areas are exceptionally clean. The rooms literally open out onto the pool which runs down the center of the hotel. Plus, Rascals has one of the best spas in Kuta. Rascals is a short walk to all that Kuta has to offer.

Xanadu is the premier surf camp in Kuta Lombok and would be a great place to go if you were traveling solo or with a girlfriend and wanted to focus on surfing. Xanadu has two locations: the Village is in town and the Boutique Retreat is in the hills above town. Xanadu Surf & Yoga Boutique Retreat offers a more luxurious surfing experience.

Villa Manolo is part of a group of villas all adjacent in the same compound making this villa excellent for groups of all sizes. These villas are immaculate and super stylish each with their own pool. The best part is that Villa Manolo is super private and secure, yet walking distance from all the action in Kuta town.

Villa Alba and sister villa, Karinya, can be booked together to accommodate larger groups or two families. Each has an open plan layout and pool. The kitchen is very well equipped with coffee, tea, milk, cereal etc. The location is on a quiet side street close to Kuta’s eat street and all the action. Villa Alba is great for families with babies as they offer all the baby kit and you can walk to restaurants without needing a motorbike.

Matcha
Everything about Matcha is geared towards relaxation from the moment you walk in the door. The massages and facials are amazing. They also have a boutique with tropical homewares and gifts made by locals.
Jivana
Jivana Spa is a go-to for inexpensive and thorough massages. We especially liked the couples massage which takes place in a private villa where you can take a shower and slip into your robe before your 60 minute or 90 minute massage. My mom went there everyday during our last trip to Lombok.
Rascals Spa
Rascals is another gem in Kuta Lombok with a full luxury spa experience. The relaxing ambience coupled with trained, professional massage therapists makes Rascals a favorite.

Loka
I mentioned Loka as an option to do a Phuket-but-with-better-surf style wellness retreat in my top Lombok Surf Camps Guide, but Loka is THE place to workout in Kuta Lombok. The owner, Matt, is a super sweet guy, a great surfer, and will make you cry (in a good way) during his group fitness sessions. Loka is the first gym in Kuta Lombok and the only place with a dedicated sauna and ice bath room. Training at Loka on flat days is a must.

Best Kuta Lombok Restaurants for Breakfast/Coffee
Milk
Milk is an institution in Kuta for coffee and breakfast. They were one of the first western cafes on the main drag and they set the standard for the rest of Kuta.
Bush Radio
Bush Radio does coffee, breakfast, and lunch. The cafe’s light and bright windows look out on the main 4 way intersection in Kuta. Think avocado toast, pitaya smoothie bowls, and fresh squeezed juice.
Best Kuta Lombok Restaurants for Lunch
My Favourite Kuta Lombok Warungs
In town, my favorite lunch spots in Kuta Lombok are the local warungs that serve a variety of dishes out of bain marie. You walk up to what you want and the server gives you a scoop of this and a scoop of that onto rice wrapped in a banana leaf or piece of butcher’s paper. She then ties it up in a nice conical package and off you go. I like to just go to whichever warung is serving lots of people that day and usually develop a new favorite each trip, last time it was Warung Asa, which is a few minutes past LOKA. This style of eating is extremely cheap and tasty. Be careful with the sambal, I love spice, but will often opt out because it makes my meal unenjoyable.
I am also always on the lookout for the bakso cart that cruises the neighborhood. I don’t really like the meatballs but I love the sweet and salty broth, noodles, fresh herbs, and a bit of spice. And that it costs less than a $1 for a fully satisfying street side meal.
At the Kuta Lombok beaches, local warungs dish out consistently delicious food from the most modest kitchens. Nothing like a woven bamboo plate with a big steaming dish of mie goreng and fried chicken served on the beach after a surf session.
At TanJung Ann Beach, we used to always eat at Warung Turtle, until this year our friend and surf guide, Lam, opened Bum Bum Warung. Both Turtle and Bum Bum are a great place to grab a bean bag and post up for a day of people watching, surfing, beach soccer, cocktails and great food.
At Mawi Beach, one family runs the local warung and they run out of all the good stuff when the surf is pumping and the surfers are starving. I always have a coconut and a mie goreng with fried chicken leg. The kids love the intricately sliced pineapples that are nature’s ice cream.
Loka
Yes, the same Loka as the gym mentioned above. Loka serves super healthy salads, savory and smoothie bowls at breakfast and lunch. The atmosphere is laid back – palm trees, surf movies, and the owner’s cute dachshund. Loka is a go-to if you want you feel healthy – go for a workout, stay for the food and the good vibes.
Best Kuta Lombok Restaurants for Dinner
Jiang Nan
This was one of my favorite meals of 2024 oddly because (1) I don’t normally like Chinese food, (2) I wouldn’t expect to eat Chinese food in Kuta Lombok. But this meal was just that good, it reminded me of Mission Chinese in San Francisco. The little restaurant gets packed so book ahead. Homemade noodles, dumplings, and excellent spicy sauces steal the show.
Bara
Bara is a vibe and we always go at least once for their woodfired pizzas served poolside. Hot tip: we bring the kids’ swimmers so once they are done eating, they can play in the pool and annoy anyone who doesn’t have kids. Kidding, but not really. Bara has great spicy margaritas called “Nanas Pedas” (spicy pineapple) and a whole exciting cocktail list. Look out for their 2 for 1 cocktail hour, you may end up swimming in the pool with the kids.
KRNK
I tried to hate on KRNK because it seemed too western, but I finally went on my last trip and found out they have the most delicious cheeseburgers. I was converted. I normally eat local food for lunch and go out for Western food for dinner because there aren’t many local dinner options. Sometimes a burger just tastes so damn good when you’ve been eating rice for weeks. If you’re going to break down and eat Western food, KRNK is your place to do it.
Warung Flora
Like I said before, the Indonesian dinner options in Kuta aren’t spectacular. But if you are in the mood for spicy, local flair, our go to is Warung Flora located on the main drag of Kuta. All the food is cooked from scratch. You can get your Indonesian standbys like gado-gado, mie goreng, yellow chicken curry dished out by the friendly owner and his wife. Generous portions and good prices.
Seasalt Lombok
We stumbled upon Seasalt Lombok when we were looking for something to eat while waiting for the party to kick off at Surfer’s Bar. Seasalt is located directly opposite the shores of Kuta Beach and noted for its fresh seafood served Mediterranean style. Fish and chips, fresh prawns, lamb koftas are served up under the blue and white awning that is reminiscent of Greece.
Best Nightlife in Kuta Lombok
The party scene is much more relaxed in Kuta Lombok than Bali, but there’s still a lot going on. Each week, there is a rotating schedule of parties on certain nights at certain bars and often the local boys put on events with DJs and live music. Our favourite weekly party spot is the Surfer’s Bar, which goes off every Friday night with a band. The Surfer’s Bar is down by Kuta Beach and is a bit of a cultural hub where you can meet locals, expats, and fellow travelers alike.

How big is Kuta Lombok?
The town of Kuta Lombok itself is a small coastal town consisting of a main strip of bars and restaurants and blocks of side streets. The town itself is relatively small, covering an area of just a few kilometers, but best to have a scooter to get around as certain hotels, bars, and restaurants aren’t within walking distance. Beyond town, you’ll also want to travel to beaches like Selong Blanak, Gerupuk, and Tanjung Aan which are all within 40 minutes of Kuta. Kuta is centrally located to all the places you’d want to visit. Kuta is much smaller and less developed than Bali.
What is the best time to visit Kuta Lombok?
Southern Lombok has two seasons: wet and dry. During the dry season (May to October), the trade wind generally blows from the Southeast. This is the wind that makes breaks on the Bukit Peninsula like Ulutwatu go off. However, for Southern Lombok this same trade wind wreaks havoc on a lot of the surf spots making the wet season my favorite time to surf. The dry season is also considerably busier with plenty of sunny days ranging from 25°C to 31°C (77°F to 88°F). The wet season sees short, but intense rain showers, higher humidity, and temperatures ranging from from 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 90°F). My favorite months are February and March for surfing.

I’ve done 20+ trips to Kuta Lombok and rarely felt unsafe. Crime is low overall, but be aware of scams. The biggest danger is the road conditions. The roads in and around Kuta Lombok are windy, narrow, and full of potholes. If you ride a motorbike be extremely careful and try to avoid driving long distances at night. I would not recommend renting your own car, hiring a driver is cheap and safe. The only other thing I would say about safety is to respect local customs, avoid arguing with locals, and know when to leave a bad situation. Lombok is predominantly Muslim, dress appropriately
Can I drink the water in Kuta Lombok?
No! Always drink sealed bottled water and do not use the tap when you brush your teeth.
Is Kuta Lombok good for families?
Yes! Kuta Lombok is a great destination for families. You can surf, eat at all different kinds of restaurants, snorkel, visit beautiful beaches, and learn about a new culture all without dealing with the traffic and hustle of Bali.
Travel Insurance for Kuta Lombok
Absolutely 100%. We never travel to Indonesia without travel insurance. Some credit cards offer travel insurance if you book your flights with them, however it is important you check the fine print and make sure you are covered. Can I drink alcohol in Kuta Lombok?
Yes! Despite alcohol being generally unacceptable in Muslim communities, beer, wine, and liquor is served in restaurants, warungs, and bars in Kuta Lombok. Some convenience stores do not serve alcoholic beverages, but Fresh Market near the 4 way intersection sells both Indonesian and international alcoholic beverages.
Is there Uber in Kuta Lombok?
No, they also don’t have Grab or GoJek like Bali. You can normally hire a motorbike through your accommodation for less than $8/day.
Do I need a car in Kuta Lombok?
Depends. If you are comfortable riding a scooter with your surfboard for up to 40 minutes, then you should be fine on a scooter. Otherwise, I would hire a driver. When we travel with kids, we have a driver on standby every day, which costs about $40 USD per day. We will also rent a bike to drive around town, short distances only.
Is Kuta Lombok worth visiting?
Yes! Yes 10x if you surf! Kuta Lombok is definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for a more laid back alternative to Bali.
Kuta Lombok vs. Bali: which is better?
Tough call! The beaches in Lombok are much more beautiful than the beaches in and around Seminyak and Canggu. Plus, there are no stairs to go down like Bingin and Uluwatu. That being said, the waves aren’t as world class as the peninsula. I personally like the vibe in Kuta Lombok because there’s no traffic, it’s more laid back, and you can get to know the locals and expats.
Is Kuta Lombok expensive?
It’s not as cheap as it once was, but prices have gone up all over Indonesia. Kuta Lombok is generally more affordable than Bali but the cost will really depend on how you like to roll.
Traveling to Kuta Lombok on a budget?
Opt for less flash guesthouses without a pool and eat local food. A local meal will cost you less than $2 USD and is a delicious way to get to know the culture.

Final thoughts: traveling to Kuta Lombok
Kuta Lombok is not Bali, and that’s why we like it! The southern Lombok beaches are undeniably beautiful and full of exquisite shells, but there’s also quite a little scene going on in Kuta. There’s not very many places in Indonesia more suited for learning to surf and intermediate surfers than Kuta Lombok.
The surf spots in Kuta Lombok offer a lot of variety for all kinds of surfers. The Lombok locals are friendly and want to show you a good time. The scene is fun and innovative. All these factors make a trip to Kuta Lombok unforgettable from the moment you arrive.
