On my second trip to Kuta Lombok in 2015, a friend sent me to the Surfers Bar Kuta Lombok to meet the boys she and her partner had met on a recent holiday. I was there for the surf, not the nightlife in Kuta, Lombok, and I had a baby in tow, so we went by to say hello in the morning. When we walked in, everyone was sleeping on hammocks and even on the tables. Charlie, the family dog, started barking, and everyone woke up and greeted us. Little did I know, these “salamat pagi’s” were the start of connections I would have for over a decade.
Tucked just off the main street in town, this beachy wooden bar looked like nothing special. A few bean bags, some local artwork, and a chalkboard with that night’s cocktail special. But from the moment I stepped in and started talking to the crew, the vibe hit differently: raw, welcoming, and real. During that trip, we’d go surfing with the brothers who owned the Surfers Bar, Bong and Wona, and their friends Yoko, Raman, Aryke, Appel, and others. At night, we’d come and hang with their mum, “Mama,” and sister, Sonya.
This family and crew were something special. Mama put our six-month-old daughter in her sarong and babysat her while we went surfing. The boys carried her around, helping her find local dogs to pat. In 2026, as Kuta continues to grow and newer spots keep popping up around town, that is exactly why this place still matters. All the new resorts and trendy restaurants still do not hold a candle to the real Lombok hospitality and community feel you get at Surfers Bar, especially as everything changes so quickly in Kuta. For travellers wanting a more grounded and personal side of town, it remains one of the easiest places to connect with the older surf culture that helped shape this place in the first instance. A Local Institution with a Global Heart
Surfers Bar isn’t just a place to drink—it’s where the local and surf communities intersect. Every night, you’ll find a mix of locals, longboarders, backpackers, digital nomads, and expats debriefing over cold beers, guitars being passed around, and strangers becoming crew. The nightlife in Kuta Lombok used just be a different crew of surfer bars throwing a party at different location each night of the week. The sand floor and beach front location reminds us of what Kuta used to be like 10 years ago before it was a popular tourist destination. The family that owns Surfers Bar has fought hard to keep their land as the government reclaims vast tracks of beach front land to auction it off to Chinese developers. I think it is important to support businesses by locals in this area so that they aren’t squeezed out by the Bubba Gump Shrimp’s of the world like on Bali.
Don’t Miss Their Party Nights
Surfers Bar Kuta Lombok is very chill on the off nights. A few years ago, it used to be that the local boys rotated party nights between venues so each could capture their share of the tourist dollar. More recently, a lot of those local bars have been shut down, but the Surfers Bar still lights up weekly on it’s part nights. This is when you want to be here if you want to mix and mingle with tourists, expats, and locals of all ages:
- Thursdays – Reggae Night with live local bands and a fire show
- Saturdays – Big Party Night with DJs, drink specials, and dancing under the stars
- Sunset Sessions (Daily) – Laid-back beats, happy hour Bintangs, and barefoot vibes
The party doesn’t really start until after 9:00 PM, but since I’m often with kids, I’ll go after dinner around 6:30-7 and dance with the kids before it fills out with party animals.
